Most current cordless machines have a lithium-ion battery. This offers the following advantages over cheaper lead or nickel cadmium batteries:

• significantly higher energy density = more power with the same weight / installation space,
• very low self-discharge,
• no "memory effect" = no loss of power when charging is incomplete.

Battery performance specifications are usually given as voltage (V = volts) and Ah = ampere-hours. As a simplified rule of thumb, the voltage (e.g., 9.6, 12, 14.4, 18, 36V) indicates the machine's performance. Ah indicates the available energy capacity, so this value can be viewed as a simplified unit of measurement for the operating time or "tank capacity" of the respective battery.

A fundamental characteristic of batteries is the relatively large influence of ambient temperature on their performance. Extreme heat or extreme cold lead to a noticeable reduction in performance in virtually all battery types, which is especially important to consider when storing batteries.

Of course, modern battery technology is not only used in cordless tools, but also increasingly in the field of power tools (lawn mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, etc.). In many areas, the advantages over gasoline- or corded-powered devices are even greater. Especially for infrequently used gasoline-powered devices (e.g., chainsaws for home users), the maintenance effort is often very high compared to the effective operating time. The market already offers a wide range of powerful devices in this area.
